Winter vaccine clinics take place after drop in take-up

Torbay residents most at risk of developing severe Covid-19 are being encouraged to get their winter vaccination after a recent fall in take up.

The next vaccination clinic takes place on Tuesday, November 14, with additional days scheduled for November 21 and 28.

The area’s vaccine service is based at the Riviera International Centre (RIC) in Torquay and run by Torbay General Practice (TGP) – an alliance of ten local GP practices.

You are eligible for a winter vaccine in Torbay if you are:

  • Aged 65 or over (by 31 March 2024)

  • Aged between five and 65 and at increased risk (for example, you have a long-term lung condition, heart condition or weakened immune system)

  • Living in a care home for older adults

  • A frontline health or social care worker

  • A carer

  • Aged 12 to 64 and live with someone with a weakened immune system.

People are asked to book their vaccination appointment either through the national booking service or by calling 119. Patients should not contact their GP practice to arrange your vaccine.

Dr Manny Austin, Lead GP for the TGP Vaccination Service, said: “Recent clinics have shown a drop in numbers, which is concerning given that we’re heading into winter.

“As the weather turns colder, respiratory viruses spread more easily and usually reach their peak over the festive and new year period.

“With that in mind it’s essential that people most at risk of severe disease get their Covid vaccine, which remains the most effective way to protect themselves and their loved ones.”
